Summary:
Interestingly enough, flax is more widely used in the cloth industry (to make linen) and in the paint and varnish industries, than it is for food. And, as with many other things in life, this does not make much sense. Considering that flax seed is the best source of omega-3 fatty acids in all of nature (that we know of), we should be putting it into everything we eat. Flax seed is one of those really well kept secrets in the health food sector. It’s almost as if you have to be privileged to know about it. Well, consider yourself privileged. Flax seed not only contains more omega-3s than the highly-toted cold-water fish, but is high in fiber and lignans, those phytoestrogens than can play a protective role by mimicking estrogen and in their antioxidant effects. Flax seed happen to be the most highly concentrated source of lignans known to man. Furthermore, studies have shown that flax seed helps lower bad cholesterol, LDL, and raise good cholesterol, HDL. As far as we’re concerned, flax seed should be a necessary part of your diet!
