Cholesterol-HDL (High Density Lipoprotein)

by Hratch L Karamanoukian, MD and Pierre Aoukar, MD
Posted: February 20

CHOLESTEROL – HDL (high density lipoprotein)

HDL particles are involved in reverse cholesterol transport. HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) is the “vacuum” that cleans the harmful effects of LDL-C. That is, it picks up cholesterol and reduces the atherogenic load from the body.

The atherogenic load is the potential to form atherosclerotic plaque disease in the body.

The more LDL-C you have in your circulation, the more HDL-C you will need to protect you from the harmful effects of LDL-C. A 1 mg/dl increase in HDL-C reduces the coronary artery disease risk by 2 % in men and 3 % in women.

Consult your primary care physician, cardiologist or cardiovascular specialist regarding your HDL-C, LDL-C and total cholesterol levels.
